Course Aim

The aim of this course is to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of the many aspects of engineering systems safety, with a focus on methods, tools, strategies, and procedures needed to prevent hazardous operations and accidents in a range of industrial contexts.

1 Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of key safety concepts, terminologies, and hazard identification techniques, including HAZOP and FMEA in industrial engineering.
2 Critically analyze and perform the qualitative and quantitative risk assessments using fault tree and event tree analysis for different industrial engineering sectors.
3 Apply advanced and specialist-level skills and methods to assess safety function deployment to effectively translate safety needs into system requirements and differentiate between safety and reliability quantification methods.
4 Evaluate human error impacts in safety systems and apply accident investigation techniques to real-world case studies, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of safety management systems
